YOUNGER MAN’S GAME

copyright 2003 William Galison/ Waking Up Music

Outside of Memphis

Offa route 57

There’s a joint called the “Rocky-Tonk Bar”

And old Sam Peters’

Been the house band leader

Since they opened up in ‘74

He’s got a ‘52 Tele

Nicotine yellow

Nothing left but scratches and scars

She sings like an angel

Screams like a devil

She’s a damn good fighting guitar

Well the band couldn’t tarry

They went and got married

Sold off all of their gear

‘Cept for bassman Jake who

Who got a hell of a break

and he’s been on the road for seventeen years

But Sam coulda made it

If his fortune hadn’t faded

When went a  ltttle hard on the juice

And he should gone to Nashville

But he got a little bashful

When he heard Danny Gatton cut loose

CHORUS  1:

It’s a younger man’s game

In a younger man’s world

You can pretty much bet that the younger man gets the girl

Just the way it goes

And it’s a doggone shame

But its tough getting older when your playing in a younger man’s ganme

VERSE : 2

Back in the 80’s

Sam was getting ladies

Just by bending  a string

But on account of that sport

He’s payin’ child support

For Sammy Junior, Little Dan and the twins

Now Sam’s still bendin’

But the ladies ain’t attending

Like they did when he wore his hair long

And every time he’ll look up

He sees some couple hook up

but he knows that he’ll be leavin’ alone

CHORUS 2

It’s a younger man’s game

In a younger man’s world

It’s a pretty safe bet that the younger man gets the girl

Just the way it goes

And it’s a doggone shame

But its tough getting older when your playing in a younger man’s game

Well in walks Buddy

He’s the young Guitar stud, he’s

Come to blow the old master away

And he’s slicker and faster

On his new Stratocaster

Than Sammy in the prime of his day

Buddy is amazing

And the crowd goes crazy

When he plays a hundred notes in a bar

But Sammy just smiles

Turns down the dials

And gives it to ‘em straight from the heart

TELECASTER SOLO

Now up jumps Brenda

The Queen of bartenders

Like she does it every night of the year

She says “It’s quarter past one”

You don’t gave to go home

But you gotta get the hell out of here!”

Now, here’s the happy ending

Sam kisses Brenda

As she’s closing down the place for the night

And after twenty years of trying

There’s no more denying

That nothin ever felt so right.

CHORUS 3:

It’s a younger man’s game

In a younger man’s world

But every once in a while, the older guy’ll the girl

And it can take some time

But just the same

It can be good getting older when your playing in a younger man’s game
